This is the first of the datasets collected as part of a research project called Inclusive Public Space: Law, Universality and Difference in the Accessibility of Streets (Inclusive Public Space or IPS project).
This was a European Research Council Advanced Grant Project which ran from 2019 to 2025. It aimed to deepen understanding of what disabled, older and other pedestrians experienced as inaccessible or exclusionary; to deepen understanding of the nature and effectiveness of law’s engagement with this type of inaccessibility and exclusion; and to raise awareness of relevant types of problem and the importance of heightened legal and political action.
This dataset concerns the experiences of our ‘pedestrian participants’. These were disabled people, older people and others (eg parents caring for young children) who felt that, as pedestrians, they encountered accessibility barriers in the streets of two cities in each of the five project countries – in India, Delhi and Pune; in Kenya, Nairobi and Mombasa; in the Netherlands, Almere and Utrecht; in the United Kingdom, Glasgow and Leeds; and, in the United States, Syracuse and Atlanta. During interviews, participants were invited to reflect on what it was they found problematic about the design, condition or usage of streets; what impact this had on their lives; and their experiences, if any, of using complaint mechanisms, legal enforcement or any other mechanisms to tackle the accessibility barriers in question.
