1. ABOUT THE DATASET -------------------- Title: Porcine hip cartilage degradation in hemiarthroplasty models under anatomical simulation dataset Creator(s): Roberto Leonardo Diaz, David Jimenez-Cruz, Sophie Williams Organisation(s): University of Leeds. Rights-holder(s): Roberto Leonardo Diaz, David Jimenez-Cruz, Sophie Williams Publication Year: 2026 Description: This dataset captures the physical changes in natural hip joint specimens across varying levels of acetabular clearance, ranging from natural tissue to extra-large clearance configurations. It features comprehensive metadata logs (SpecimensLog.csv and Degraded-Pre-test Ratio.csv) alongside an organised repository of sequential photographic observations taken at every hour for eight hours of testing. The collection is designed to support the analysis of material degradation, and component pairing, under controlled experimental conditions. PROJECT AND FUNDING INFORMATION ---------------------------------- Title: Enhanced surgical treatments for hip osteoarthritis Dates: 01 January 2018 - 31 December 2023 Funding organisation: Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Grant no.: EP/R003971/1 4. CONTENTS ----------- The repository consist of: SpecimensLog.csv — Metadata file with sample details, including internal IDs, measurements, and pairing size. Degraded-Pre-test Ratio.csv — Metadata file with degraded-pre-test ratio (%) for each sample. Dataset - Image dataset, organised in folders hierarchically as follows: Group-> Sample -> Time -> Observation File naming convention Individual observation images use the following naming pattern: grp{XX}_smp{YY}_t{ZZ}_obs{AA}.jpg WHERE: Group (grp). Folders are categorised by the specific acetabular clearance tested: grpNT – Natural Tissue grpNC – Negative Clearance grpSC – Small Clearance grpLC – Large Clearance grpXLC – Extra Large Clearance Sample (smp). Individual specimen folders follow the naming convention: smpXX smpXX – The specimen number (e.g., smp01). Time (t). Time folders represent the testing timepoint, starting at 0H for the intact case: - All groups except Natural Tissue: sampled every 1 hour (0H, 1H, 2H, 3H, ...). - Natural Tissue group: sampled every 2 hours (0H, 2H, 4H, ...). Observation (obs). Each time folder contains one or more JPG images, one per observation taken at that timepoint. Example: grpXLC_smp02_t4H_obs01.jpg — Extra Large Clearance group, specimen 2, 4-hour timepoint, observation 1. | Field | Meaning | Example | |-------|------------------------------------------------------------|---------| | grp | Group code (see nomenclature above) | grpXLC | | smp | Specimen number within the group, zero-padded (01, 02...) | smp02 | | t | Timepoint, in hours, followed by H | t4H | | obs | Observation number at that timepoint, zero-padded | obs01 | 5.
