Dataset description
This dataset documents the outcomes of a three-round Delphi study conducted with 30 kindergarten teachers within the Gomoa-Central district in Ghana to explore the challenges and potential solutions related to the identification and support of children with Speech, Language, and Communication Needs (SLCN). The data encompasses both qualitative and quantitative information gathered through online surveys administered via the Qualtrics platform. The initial round elicited open-ended responses from teachers detailing the difficulties they encounter and the strategies they currently employ. Subsequent thematic analysis of these responses informed the generation of specific challenge and solution statements. In the second and third rounds, teachers ranked these statements based on their perceived significance and effectiveness, with the provision of anonymized group feedback between rounds to encourage the development of consensus. Thus, the dataset includes the original qualitative responses, the quantitative rankings from both the second and final rounds, and demographic information about the participating teachers, such as their gender, teaching level (KG1 or KG2), circuit, and years of experience. The findings of this study highlight significant obstacles encountered by teachers, such as insufficient training and knowledge and skills around identification, high teacher-pupil ratio (which affects workload and interaction with children), inadequate physical resources/infrastructure. The consensus reached on potential solutions emphasised the importance of enhanced professional development opportunities tailored to SLCN, improved access to specialist support services for both teachers and students, and the cultivation of stronger communication and collaborative frameworks among educators, parents, and specialists. Ultimately, this research offers valuable insights for informing targeted interventions, policy adjustments, and resource allocation aimed at improving the educational experiences and outcomes for young children with SLCN in kindergarten settings.
