Publication Year: 2024 Description: Porcine cysticercosis is an important public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa. We carried out a cross-sectional survey of 744 pigs in 6 abattoirs in Rwanda. Pig characteristics were recorded and infection status was assessed using a commercial antigen-ELISA. Whole carcass dissection was carried out on a subset of 67 pigs, in order to estimate the diagnostic accuracy of the ELISA and to confirm the species of tapeworm present. The data indicate a high prevalence of porcine cysticercosis in Rwandan abattoirs.
