PROJECT AND FUNDING INFORMATION ---------------------------------- Title: Applying thermodynamic laws to the energy-GDP decoupling problem Dates: 29 June 2018 to 30 June 2024 Funding organisation: Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Grant no.: EP/R024251/1 4. CONTENTS ----------- File listing: This data repository contains two files: 1) sector_agg_eta_fu_X.csv and 2) agg_eta_pfu_X.csv. sector_agg_eta_fu_X.csv A 1973674 row, 11 column .csv file containing sectoral exergy consumption at the final and useful stages, with one exergy efficiency metric - final to useful. Column definitions are as follows: Country The ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 code for each country. Method The method used for accounting for the primary energy content of electricity and heat produced from non-combustible sources. At present one method is used, the Physical Content Method (PCM). Energy.type The energy type, i.e. energy (E) or exergy (X). Year The year. IEAMW Whether the metrics contain data derived from the International Energy Agencies (IEA) World Extended Energy Balances only; muscle work data derived from the International Labour Organisation and Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations only (MW); or both (Both). Industry.aggregation One of three values: Specified, Despecified, or Grouped. Describing the aggregation level of the sectors. GrossNet Whether the metrics have been calculated by including (Gross) or excluding (Net) IEA data from the Energy Industry in Own Use (EIOU) sector. Sector The sector, or sector grouping. When Industry.aggregation is equal to "Specified" or "Despecified" these sectors are equivalent to the sectors used in the IEA's World Extended Energy Balances. When Industry.aggregation is equal to "Grouped" the IEA sectors are aggregated into a smaller number of grouped sectors, namely: "Agriculture, forestry, and fishing", "Commercial and public services", "Energy industry own use", "Final consumption not elsewhere specified", "Industry", "Non-energy use", "Residential", and "Transport". Final Final energy or exergy consumption. Units of TJ. Useful Useful energy or exergy consumption. Units of TJ. eta_fu Final-useful energy or exergy efficiency. Numerical range is 0 to 1, which means 0% to 100% agg_eta_pfu_X.csv A 126474 row, 12 column .csv file containing aggregate exergy consumption at the primary, final, and useful stages, with three exergy efficiency metrics: 1) primary to final, final to useful, and primary to useful. At present, to prevent reverse-calculation of the licenced IEA World Extended Energy Balances data only the exergy data is provided in the public domain. Year The year. IEAMW Whether the metrics contain data derived from the IEA's World Extended Energy Balances only; muscle work data derived from the International Labour Organisation and Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations only (MW); or both (Both). GrossNet Whether the metrics have been calculated by including (Gross) or excluding (Net) IEA data from the Energy Industry in Own Use (EIOU) sector. EX.p Primary energy or exergy consumption. Units of TJ. EX.f Final energy or exergy consumption. Units of TJ. EX.u Useful energy or exergy consumption. Units of TJ. eta_pf Primary-final energy or exergy efficiency. Numerical range is 0 to 1, which means 0% to 100% eta_fu Final-useful energy or exergy efficiency. Numerical range is 0 to 1, which means 0% to 100% eta_pu Primary-useful energy of exergy efficiency. Numerical range is 0 to 1, which means 0% to 100% 5. METHODS ---------- The software and methodology used to produce these datasets is described in Heun et al (2024) and Brockway et al (in press). The two files sector_agg_eta_fu_X.csv and agg_eta_pfu_X.csv correspond to the "ReleaseSectorAggEtaFUCSV" and "ReleaseAggEtaPFU" targets produced in the {PFUAggPipeline} R package, with the following alterations. 1. At present to prevent reverse-calculation of the licenced IEA World Extended Energy Balances data only the exergy data is provided. 2. In the sector_agg_eta_fu_X.csv file the following columns have been removed which are not used in the current release (v1.2): Chopped.mat, Chopped.var, and Product.aggregation; along with redundant duplicate observations. 3. In the agg_eta_pfu_X.csv the following columns have been removed which are not used in the current release (v1.2): Last.stage, Chopped.mat, Chopped.var, Product.aggregation, and Industry.aggregation; along with redundant duplicate observations.
