Dataset description
This dataset comprises the audio stimuli, experimental responses, quantative data and analysis code for the two experiments reported in the related publication Plug et al. (2023). The audio stimuli are short sentences produced by a female speaker of Southern British English. In many, selected sounds were manipulated to make specific word forms potentially lexically ambiguous. In the experiments, the stimuli were presented to listeners who saw a disambiguating orthographical transcription of each sentence on screen. Crucially, two groups of participants were given two different disambiguating orthographies. Participants' tasks revolved around the estimation of the (relative) speech tempo of the stimuli. The experiments' designs are described in detail in Plug et al. The quantitative data files contain participant responses, coding for the orthography manipulation and various control variable data, including acoustic measurements extracted from the stimuli. Crucial R code for replicating the statistical analyses reported in Plug et al. is included.
